At least thirteen passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.
A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the year before. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in civilian projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition urged an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these national projects.
